As I See It

Is all this “smart” stuff making us dumber?

Scott Robert Shaw

Is technology making us dumber? It seems just about everything has gone high-tech these days, but I feel a little less bright as a result. Cell phones are great, but I don’t even know my kid’s phone numbers anymore. I just swipe until I see their name on the screen. I hope I don’t lose that phone. Cars have gone high-tech, with big display screens common in the center of the dash. But there are so many buttons and cameras, it can actually make driving dangerous with all those distractions. But it’s ok, because I don’t even have to know how to stop the car. With newer cars if you get too close to something, the brakes are applied for you. You don’t even have to know how to parallel park anymore with self-parking cars, and soon we won’t even have to know how to drive at all with the advent of self-driving cars. And we don’t even need to know how to get to where we want to go, we just ask Google maps. I don’t need to remember to take out the trash, or pick up my kids. I don’t even have to remember their birthdays, I just wait for the notification. I don’t even have to know how to spell. Just use autocorrect. All this smart technology is great, but I’m not sure it is actually making us any smarter. What do you think? If you’re not sure, you can always ask Google.
