The law officers involved in a November shooting death outside a Monroe County tavern will not face criminal charges.

Michael Nguyen was shot and killed on Nov. 5, during a confrontation with officers outside the Cotter Pin bar in Leon, Wis, just south of Sparta.

The State Patrol, sheriff’s office and Sparta Police responded, after Nguyen’s wife called 911 and said she had been choked by him.

The Monroe County District Attorneys office said Nguyen’s wife and child were inside the bar for a time, while police tried to negotiate with Nguyen, who was carrying a gun and threatening to kill himself outside the bar.

After breaking a tavern window and firing his gun, Nguyen was shot by an officer and later died at the Sparta hospital.

DA Kevin Croninger reviewed the state report and said the officers involved, two from the sheriff’s department and one Sparta policeman, acted lawfully.
