As I See It

Evers wisely abandons gun-control efforts

It is good to see that Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is a realist. Evers has been at odds with the Republican-controlled Legislature on issues related to gun control. He wants more laws to reduce gun-related violence, and Republicans don’t. He used his executive authority to call a special session of the Legislature and force them to take up two gun-control measures. One called for universal background checks for all gun purchases, and the other would have allowed judges to temporarily take away guns from those deemed a threat to themselves or others. Republican legislative leaders did indeed call a special session to order, then immediately adjourned the meeting with no vote, and no debate. Evers said he was considering calling lawmakers into another special session, but must now realize that would be futile. The results would be the same. Now, in the wake of two Wisconsin school shootings on consecutive days, Evers is no longer considering another special session to deal with gun control. He says he wants to focus on issues where there is common ground between Republicans and Democrats, perhaps more funding for mental health services in the state’s schools. That makes sense. Because it is clear that given the current makeup of the Legislature, gun-control laws are going nowhere. Evers is smart to wait until after the next election, when he may find common ground on gun control to be a little more common.
