As I See It

How would they respond if President Obama was accused of doing it?

We talked earlier this week about how the efforts to impeach President Trump may backfire. Now, let’s get into the why. It is because Republican lawmakers in Washington don’t have the political courage to vote to impeach. The same members of Congress and Senate, who were critical of Trump during the 2016 primary elections, are running for political cover now that they are in office. They don’t dare speak out against the President because it may hurt their chances of re-election. And that is what they truly care about. More so than setting a precedent of allowing a United States President to seek foreign help in influencing the outcome of our elections. If Trump is not impeached, it opens the door to more outside influence in our elections. It opens the door to our presidents threatening to withhold aid to our allies in other countries unless they do his political bidding. It would give the green light to presidents putting personal political gain over our national security interests. But those who are so quick to defend the President’s actions by either arguing he did nothing wrong, or that the offense does not rise to the level of being impeachable, need to ask themselves one question. If they really think this is no big deal, no danger to our democracy, they need to consider what they would have done if President Obama had been accused of the same behavior Trump is accused of. Would they have defended his actions? Of course not. They would have done whatever they could to bring him down. Now is not the time to put politics over country. Our democracy is in too much danger for that.

Nothing would happen because there is no impeachable offense.
