La Crosse Police stress safety for trick-or-treaters

The costumes will be out in full force Thursday as kids hunt for candy in the city.

Safety is key, stress La Crosse Police.

“Make sure that children are accompanied by parents or a responsible adult at all times.” La Crosse Police Lieutenant Avrie Schott said. “Don’t stray from groups, and try to trick or treat where the child is familiar with.”

The recommended trick-or-treating hours in La Crosse are at 4-8 p.m. but parents should remember it gets dark much earlier.

Police also recommend looking through candy to make sure it’s safe before giving it to children.

“Take the treats home and examine them before they dig in,” Schott said. “Throw any items away that aren’t wrapped or packaged by the original manufacturer.”

Schott also suggests putting reflective tape on costumes to make them more visible to cars or have them where light-colored costumes.
