It is time to clean out the medicine cabinet.

The Winona County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) and the Winona Police Department will host a free prescription drug take-back event on Saturday, October 26th, 2019 as part of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event will take place in the Winona HyVee Parking Lot from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

National Drug Take-Back Day is an annual event to safely dispose of the extra prescription drugs that are unused or expired. Law enforcement and community volunteers will be there to help direct traffic, collect items in trash bags, and hand out information about other safe disposal options. People are encouraged to bring items in their original containers and blacken or scratch out personal information. All items will be safely incinerated. Controlled substances and prescribed liquid narcotics will be accepted, but Winona County ASAP asked people to take needles and over-the-counter medications to the Hazardous Waste Center (225 W 2nd Street, Winona, MN).

Winona County ASAP has collected over 800 pounds of prescription drugs over the last three years. Staff said if not disposed of properly, these substances can harm the environment or become misused to sell, get high, or self-medicate.

Anyone with questions about the event can call Winona County ASAP at 507-474-2727.
