As I See It

Just let lawmaker do his job without trying to grab more power

Even when it looks like they are trying to be nice, they are actually being underhanded. Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is finally agreeing to hold a vote on allowing a disabled member of the Assembly to phone in to some meetings rather than be there in person. Vos had for months refused to consider the request of Rep. Jimmy Anderson to change the rules to make it easier to participate in legislative hearings. But in what on the surface seems like a good deed, Vos scheduled a vote on the rule changes. But not before pairing the bill with several other bills only designed to strengthen the republican hold on power. The bill, allowing the lawmaker who is paralyzed from the waist down to call into meetings is paired with legislation which would give republicans more opportunity to override a veto of the democratic Governor. Currently the Assembly is only allowed one vote to try to overturn a gubernatorial veto. Under this bill, they would have unlimited attempts. Other changes would allow Republican lawmakers to set debate times for bills without Democrats’ consent, and would allow the convening of a floor session even if a number of lawmakers are absent. It is shameful that legislative leaders are forcing lawmakers to decide if they are willing to give up some power in exchange for allowing a disabled lawmaker to more easily do his job.

It is about time for that vote. I do not get what the big deal is not letting this good man vote or join in when due to his disability he can not be there. Vos is being an ass on this one and it should be a straight up vote with no other issues. I have found it does no good to email Vos or call his office, he only listens to himself. I do agree with him on many things but not this one or limiting power of the Governor or other.
