Departing police chief hopes successor can be found in La Crosse

As La Crosse Police Chief Ron Tischer prepares to step down next week, the search is on to replace him. 

After seven years of leading the department, Tischer will go to Payson, Arizona, to become that city’s chief. 

Tischer told WIZM that he has confidence in the La Crosse police and fire commission to find his successor, preferably already on the local police force.

“I would hope that they take a very, very serious look at our internal candidates,” Tischer said, “because I think when the process is complete, whether you do a nationwide search or not, I think and I hope they find that the perfect candidate was right here in La Crosse.”

Tischer, who became chief here just before the 2012 Oktoberfest, added that he and his wife have made many lifelong friends during their time in La Crosse.     

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
