Interim police chief to be named next week

La Crosse is taking steps to name a temporary police chief, to run the department when current chief Ron Tischer moves to Arizona.

The city council’s personnel committee is giving the police and fire commission the go-ahead to appoint an interim chief.

Tischer’s last day as chief is July 23rd, after which he will become police chief in Payson, Arizona.

Council member Doug Happel, who sits on the La Crosse police and fire commission, says it could take a month to properly post the job opening, and another month to interview candidates.

The interim appointment is expected late next week, when the commission meets on July 11th.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
