Onalaska sophomore Malacek takes home state title in first trip

Onalaska sophomore Amalia Malacek in the 1,600-meter run May 31, at the WIAA state track and field meet.

Her first trip to state ended with a state championship.

Onalaska High School sophomore Amalia Malacek won the 1,600-meter Friday at the Division 1 WIAA state track and field meet. She destroyed her personal best with a 4:55.77 to win the event.

Her sister, Lydia Malacek, took second place in the 800 (2:13.43) during Day 1 of the two-day meet held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

In Division 2, a host of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau athletes took home top finishes.

Senior Dana Feyen took second place in the 1,600 (5:02.76), while junior Davis Wenthe finished fourth in the high jump (6-foot-6).

Doug Feyen took sixth in the 3,200 (9:50.75), while the triple triple jump had a host of local athletes finished on the podium, led by Westby sophomore Grace Hebel in second (38-2).

Viroqua senior Xana Leum was third (37-11¾), G-E-T sophomore Rachel Amoth finished fifth 36-4¼; and Viroqua sophomore Katrina Koppa was next, in sixth (36-3).

Also finishing on the podium in the 1,600 was Viroqua’s Jillian Weston, in fifth (5:09.78).

In Division 3, Aquinas senior Ethan Gregg took second in the 3,200 (9:45.08), while Onalaska Luther senior David Vannucchi was right behind him in third (9:51.55).

In the shot put, Aquinas senior Bryce Lee finished in fourth (49-8).

On the girls side, Melrose-Mindoro junior Emily Herzberg took silver in the triple jump (38-4¼), while Blair-Taylor senior Kylah Fredrixon took eighth (36-01¾).

Multiple athletes qualified for today’s finals, which begin — for all divisions — at 10:30 a.m.
