La Crosse organization gives new tools for construction classes

Twenty La Crosse area schools — both high school and technical college
— received new tools for their industrial arts and construction programs Tuesday night.

It was part of a program through the La Crosse Area Builders Association called Tools for Schools.

The hope of the organization is that the gifts would increase the desire for students to get into the industry.

“It’s not just about tools,” executive officer Tena Bailey said. “It’s about getting those students into the trades and, also, about possible jobs in the future.”

The tools given away, which many districts can’t afford, cost almost $11,000.

“We keep hearing about taxpayers needing to fund more programs for the schools, or they’ll have to cut them,” Bailey said. “This is our way of helping to make sure this type of program doesn’t get cut, because it’s very important.”

The schools also get a chance at more tools if they win a video competition, which gives members an idea of how they will use the items, and ensures they are being utilized.
