County landfill had equipment problems and fewer visitors during January cold spell

Our recent spell of subzero weather in La Crosse affected almost everybody in the area…and it even had some impact on the county landfill.

Workers at the landfill tell a county committee that even though the facility stayed open through those cold days, the volume of traffic was less than half of what the landfill got during the same week a year ago.

Some major garbage haulers cut back on their runs to the landfill when their trucks wouldn’t work properly.

And the heater in the maintenance shop on site did go out, but smaller heaters were used until the main heater could be repaired.
