Re-open the government.

That’s the top priority on a to-do list for Congress being touted today by La Crosse Democrat Ron Kind.

Before returning to Washington following the Martin Luther King weekend, Kind spoke with local reporters about the need to bring furloughed federal employees back to work.

Kind’s proposal also calls for more high-tech border security and greater enforcement of immigration laws.

He also wants to charge fines to illegal immigrants as a way to help them earn citizenship.

At $2000 per person, Kind claims those fines could add up to $24 billion.

Kind says getting Senate Republicans to consider some of the plans is a key to passage, but he expects that the Senators don’t want to defy President Trump.

Meanwhile, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell is planning a vote this week on President Trump’s plan to end the stalemate.

McConnell says it’s Democrats who need to put the country ahead of politics.
