Pilot parking program still in the plans for La Crosse, lacks start date

Three months later, a paid parking pilot program still lacks a start date in La Crosse.

It was mid-September when the city’s Board of Public Works, without much notice, approved a test paid on-street parking program around both the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Western Technical College campuses.

The test was meant to try out a process that involved paying by phone a $1 an hour fee to park on the street in certain places.

College students caught wind of the plan and immediately protested, saying, in part, they were being targeted as a revenue source.

Despite an attempt by the student representative on the city council to block the pilot, it is moving forward, though there hasn’t a firm start date from the city’s police department or parking utility.

The city’s police department and parking utility remain committed to the test program.

Meanwhile, the city council, in January will, again, consider a proposal by one council member to block the pilot from being enacted.
