Five years for man involved in police shooting

Five years behind bars is the sentence for a man involved in a La Crosse police shooting.

It was a standoff that led to the shooting and national media attention in the winter of 2016. Daniel Lexvold of La Crosse charged police at the standoff, swinging a chain and hitting a police dog.

Police had tried to subdue Lexvold with other means but when he charged, they were apparently left with little choice but to use lethal force. Lexvold was wounded in that confrontation.

The 39-year-old Lexvold reached a plea agreement in August and was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison.  He’ll get credit for 580 days already spent in jail.

An investigation into the shooting found officers acted appropriately in the situation.

The sentencing also covers an incident in La Crosse earlier this year, when Lexvold was stopped by police and made a point to tell them he didn’t have his chain with him.
