Plans to remodel two of La Crosse’s three public libraries are moving closer to reality.

The list of potential architects for the project has been cut from nine to four companies.

The city is planning to merge the South Branch library with the current South Side senior center on Denton Street.

The Main Street library wants to fill a vacant 10,000-square-foot area, which had been occupied by the La Crosse County Historical Society.

Those four final firms will be in town Jan. 17-18 to do interviews.

A final decision is anticipated early next year.

“Hopefully, by March, the firm that we select will begin its work in collecting information and arranging for public input sessions, and so forth,” library director Kelly Krieg-Sigman said.
