Kabat thinks council should act on VA transitional home

A possible VA transitional home on La Crosse’s south side may have some on the fence about whether it should be allowed.

Mayor Tim Kabat is not one of them.

Kabat supports the somewhat controversial plan to allow the home in an otherwise single-family residential neighborhood.

He also doesn’t think he’s that far apart from neighbors who’ve opposed the plan.

“I think the neighbors are all very supportive and respectful the veterans and just what the VA is trying to do,” Kabat said while in the WIZM studio (listen here). “The sense is just that they, and I’m kind of paraphrasing, they felt that the location was not the best location.”

Kabat also wants to get it over with. He said he would prefer the city council this week approve a contentious plan for turning the donated house into a VA transitional home.

The council appears closer to putting the decision off for another month.

Kabat thinks there’s been enough information provided about the home to make a call.

“Just personally, I think with the proper process and staffing in place, I support the request,” Kabat said. “I do feel like, for the sake of everyone involved, it’s time to make a decision.”

Dave and Barb Erickson want to gift their 7,000-square-foot home to the VA so it can set it up for veterans in transition.

It would house up to eight vets at a time to stay for 6-12 months. It would become the first such home in the U.S. with a full-time staff.

The home is located at 3120 Farnam Street. It has seven bedrooms and four bathrooms. Property tax bill for it is currently a little north of $12,000.
