Getting car stolen after leaving it unattended in La Crosse might not be the end of troubles

Cold mornings are here consistently and if you’re one that parks on the streets of La Crosse, you may want to invest in a remote starter.

If you start your car the traditional way, and leave it running and unattended, it’s a $124 fine.

On top of that, you might not have a car.

“It’s always about that means and opportunity,” La Crosse Police Sergeant Tom Walsh said. “If somebody’s cold and walking, and they see that vehicle running and no one around it, it really is an easier opportunity for them to get a cheap quick and easy ride home.”

If a vehicle is on city streets or a city parking lot, it’s illegal to leave it running with the key in the ignition, unattended.

Born in Decorah Iowa. I've been a news reporter for the last 10 years, starting right out of college in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Other professional opportunities led me to Marshalltown, Iowa and Antigo Wisconsin, before I finally was afforded the opportunity here in La Crosse. I've been here since 2016. I also act as the voice of local sports, doing play by play of high school and college football and basketball. When not working I enjoy golfing.

Cops don’t have to follow the same rules as everyday folk. I’m sorry you misunderstood.

Has this even happened in La Crosse? We don’t have a car theft problem.

Dear guy who was quoted. You pulled that explanation out of your ass because that’s a bullshit law and you know it. You best believe if I get a ticket I’m taking them to court. I’m not paying your fucking wages through a dumbass ticket because I wanted to prevent transmission damage. “By any ‘means’, I’ll take the damn ‘opportunity’ to prevent further repairs on my vehicle. Pull your head out of your asses.

This is insane. People have been starting there cars to warm them up for years. Is the city of La Crosse that broke they need to invent new ways to get money. If they got criminal elements of the streets this wouldnt be an issue.
