La Crosse council approves refund for Menards, puts off vote on campus parking plan

The city of La Crosse is settling a tax dispute with Menards, but some city council members want to put an end to those tax refunds for box stores.

The council voted unanimously Thursday night to refund $35,000 in excess property taxes to Menards.

David Marshall was one council member hoping that state leaders will change the so-called “dark store” loophole in the law, following passage of some Wisconsin referendums opposing the practice.

In other council business, a vote on a paid parking plan for La Crosse college neighborhoods has been put off for two months.

The idea is to give the city and two colleges more time to negotiate a plan for student parking.

And 6th District council member Jacqueline Marcou announced she will not seek re-election in April, because she expects to move out of the district for family-related reasons.
