President not to blame, but needs to tone down rhetoric

Police continue to investigate a series of suspicious packages containing pipe bombs, ten so far, sent to prominent democrats including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Other bombs were sent to the likes of Robert DeNiro and CNN. We don’t yet know who is behind what is being labeled as terrorism. Some are ready to lay the blame at the feet of President Trump. But we can assume he is not the one responsible. Critics point out each of the targets of these bombs were those singled out repeatedly by Trump, and he has repeatedly at his rallies, chanted things like lock her up, or hurled personal insults such as Pocahontas, or Horse Face. He has labeled our free press, while protected by the Constitution, the enemy of the people. The crowd eats it up. But as we know there are fringe elements in our society who need only the slightest nudge to go over the edge, and perhaps even commit violence. Trump may not be to blame for these acts of terror, but as the head of CNN points out, words matter. During his stop in Wisconsin on Wednesday, Trump wisely called for unity. But by the next morning, he was tweeting again that the media is to blame for the political divisiveness in our country. So much for unity. Trump needs to tone down his rhetoric, if he can, for more than just one day. Or no doubt others will take his calls of the press being the enemy of the people literally and continue to foster terrorist acts.
