The Freedom Honor Flight will be holding a fundraiser next week to help pay for veteran flights to D.C.

It’s called Homecoming for Heroes, set up by the L-Club at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The fundraiser will take place Oct. 27 from 5-9 p.m. in Mitchell Hall on campus following the homecoming football game against UW-Platteville.

“All privately funded. Flights have continually gotten more expensive,” Pat Stephens, board member the honor flights, said, adding they each cost around $110,000.

UW-L athletic director Kim Blum said the event is just another way they try and honor veterans and help them, after they return to civilian life.

Homecoming for Heroes will feature food, beverages and music, including Three Bucks and Change, which includes UW-L men’s track and  field coach Josh Buchholtz.

Admission is free and donations will be accepted. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Freedom Honor Flight.

During the event (7 p.m.), UW-L will also induct Josh Chelf (wrestling), Amanda Medendorp (swimming & diving), Angela Muenkel (volleyball), Kristen Nokleby (soccer) and Sally Wenzel (softball) to its Wall of Fame.

I also act as the voice of local sports, doing play by play of high school and college football and basketball. When not working I enjoy golfing.
