The state of Wisconsin has now awarded the School District of Onalaska just under $284,260 in school safety grants.

The district was just awarded another round of grants totaling $184,260. It initially received $99,950 from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Some of that money will be spent on surveillance.

“We had the administrators go through their buildings and look for areas that needed to have better coverage so we added cameras,” director of business services Kent Ellickson said.

Money will also go toward fixing the door system, replacing the analog two-way radio system and providing training for teachers and parents to better address mental health issues.

“We have some training for adolescent mental health for the staff, that’s a required component for the Round 1,” Ellickson said. “And, we also put in some additional resources for parent training.”
