Have a happy, and safe Oktoberfest

Happy Oktoberfest! The annual celebration of our German heritage has now begun in La Crosse, and for many people that means fun. Lots of fun. A chance to enjoy good food, music and friends, perhaps those you don’t see often. For many festers, beer takes center stage once that golden keg is tapped. And while that can be fun, it can also be dangerous. More important than having fun this weekend is staying safe. And that means making good decisions. Like making sure you get home safely by planning in advance. As La Crosse police point out, there are more options than ever for safe transportation now that Uber and Lyft have come to town. You can get a safe ride from the La Crosse Tavern League. Or simply have a designated driver. It is also important that you be respective of others, and their property. Responsible festers don’t just throw their empties in someone’s yard, or drunkenly try to get in a house where they swear they just left a party. They don’t vandalize, and don’t punch a police horse as happened years ago. It is important to keep a close eye on your friends to make sure they stay safe. Many in the community work hard to help keep people safe, like those manning the Third Street Aid Station for those who may need water, to charge their phone or simply meet up with friends. So enjoy fest, and please do so safely. And remember, no squirrel tossing. Happy Oktoberfest. Prost!
