As I See It

We shouldn’t need a permit to throw a party

Tailgating is a Wisconsin tradition. But under some changes being considered by lawmakers in Madison, your ability to do so, at least if alcohol is being served, could be curtailed. A legislative study committee met yesterday to consider new laws regulating alcohol consumption. This looks to be a resurrection of a similar attempt last year that threatened to ban the consumption of alcohol while tailgating at Lambeau Field or at Miller Park. This revised bill would exempt Packers and Brewers fans from the restrictions, but would ban the consumption of alcohol at a number of other locations, unless a proper permit was granted. If approved, this bill would require a license or permit to legally consume alcohol at a private event. Specifically, those hoping to imbibe at certain private gatherings like wedding barns, dinner parties at vacation rental homes, camping on leased hunting land or even cruising on a pontoon boat could be subject to new licensing requirements. Those organizing the events would have to get costly permit in order for people to consume alcohol on their property. This is still America isn’t it? Why should we need more government red tape in order to throw a party? Plus, the language in the proposed legislation is vague, and would no doubt lead to confusion. Are we going to have to consult state statutes before popping a beer on a rented pontoon boat or host a wedding reception? Talk about the heavy hand of government. Lawmakers should put the brakes on this bill, and pop a cold one to celebrate our remaining freedoms.
