Watchdog group sues Schimel over records in health lawsuit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A group is suing the Wisconsin Department of Justice after it refused to turn over emails related to Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel’s lawsuit seeking to overturn the national health care law.

The Center for Media and Democracy filed the lawsuit Monday in Madison.

The organization says in its lawsuit that it filed an open records request with DOJ in August seeking all internal communications in 2018 related to the health care law, known as the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare.”

The Justice Department denied the request, calling it too burdensome.

Schimel joined a multi-state lawsuit seeking to overturn the health care law in April. Both he and Republican Gov. Scott Walker have tried for years to strike down the law, a position that’s being used against them by Democrats in their re-election campaigns this year.
