The month long, large item garbage pickup in La Crosse may be coming to a close.
This was the third year the city offered four weeks in May and June to dump that dinette set or couch on the curb and get it picked up for free.
Rising costs, however, are forcing some changes to the process.
Next year, the city could move to just a two week pickup period.
Another option under serious consideration is simply having big dumpsters at Isle la Plume, where you can take things to dispose of yourself.
A final decision on the large item pickup could be made in the next few weeks.
Last year, the city spent $106,400 for a contractor to dispose of 268 tons of recliners, bookshelves and other large items. That doesn’t include the 2,000 mattresses and box springs that were recycled.
Electronics and appliances are not part of the large item pickup.
