Paid parking plan moves toward final steps in La Crosse

There are still some issues to be decided about a plan to charge for parking on the streets of La Crosse but the plan is moving ahead.

Today, the city’s Board of Public Works will consider plans for a pilot program to eliminate two-hour free parking on some streets around the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Western Technical College (maps below). Vehicles in those areas would instead be charged to park.

The police have laid out a proposal for four-hour parking limits on the streets with a $1 per hour charge.

Users would have to pay by phone through an app or using a toll free number.

At this point, it’s unclear how far the paid street parking might extend in the future. A start date for the one-year pilot program has also not been set.

Those who live in the neighborhoods where the paid parking is in place would be exempt.
