District Attorney recall election in Trempealeau set for Oct. 2

A recall election for Trempealeau County’s district attorney is now officially set for Oct. 2.

That’s the date set by the state elections commission, after getting enough signatures on a petition to recall DA Taavi McMahon.

If more than two candidates file, the October date will be a primary and the general recall election would be on Nov. 6  the normal election day.

McMahon has been criticized for how he has managed the prosecutor’s office and for suspending an assistant prosecutor who plans to run in the recall election.

McMahon would not be a candidate if he resigns by Sept. 1, but he is actively fighting the recall effort.

Assistant DA John Sacia says he has been suspended by McMahon for planning to run in the recall election.
