New wastewater treatment plant might become reality in Holmen after meetings

The Village of Holmen is in the process of building a new wastewater treatment plant.

Village Administrator Scott Heinig says the need is high, based on the workload of current equipment.

“Our current facility was built over 30 years ago,” Heinig said. “It’s not only run the course of its life but it was built when our community was only 3,000 people. Now, we’re pushing over 10,000. The capacity just isn’t there anymore.”

Heinig says the construction will be paid for by service fees by customers.

“We need to analyze whether or not there’s a fee impact,” he said, “but we’re fairly confident that the existing fee structure, implemented about four years ago, should absorb most of the expected debt.”

Vote on the general contractor is being held during a pair of meetings this week. Construction will take about two years to complete.

The first meeting will be tonight with the Finance and Personnel Committee. Thursday, the Village Board will discuss the plan.

Heinig says the old facility will remain in use, while the new one is built right along side it.
