La Crosse mayor to suggest city wheel tax

La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat is running out of options.

Kabat, in the WIZM studio Tuesday, said there’s a diminishing number of couch cushions under which to find money to rebuild roads in the city.

So a city wheel tax could be next. It’s just in the conversation phase currently, but Kabat said the city may have little choice in the future.

“I would be, generally, in support of looking at that, perhaps, with a sunset or something to say that it’s not permanent but would be for a few years,” Kabat said. “We are pretty much at our, you know, we’ve exhausted all of our options as far as how we want to continue to get caught up on all our local streets.”

State law allows the city council to vote on whether to adopt a wheel tax. Kabat envisions one between $20-$25 per eligible vehicle.

In the past, Kabat has pushed back against county government adopting a wheel tax. He has said it was unfair for La Crosse city drivers in relation to how proceeds from the tax would be distributed.
