Holmen school district clarifies expulsion process after father’s concern for daughters is shared on social media

A father’s concern for his daughter’s safety has led the School District of Holmen to publicly speak about its expulsion process on Tuesday.

The disclosure comes after Brian Treadway shared a video on social media that included his statement about a student who threatened his daughters and was caught at school with a knife.

At the time, Treadway condemned the school district for considering allowing the student to come back to school.

During an interview on Tuesday, he seemed less concerned about that and more frustrated with a lack of communication from the district about the process to keep the student out of school.

“My wife and I have had to push the issue to obtain any communication on this,” Treadway said.

Holmen superintendent Kristin Mueller says the boy has not met the provisions that would have allowed him back into school for the summer semester this year.  Or, ever.

Mueller says the conditions to return to school aren’t necessarily easy ones to meet.

“These can be very difficult to accomplish but are meant to help the student with possible substance abuse or mental health issues they might have,” Mueller said.

“So the conditions basically reassure that the district is safe the expelled student were to return,” she added.

Mueller says the provisions were determined to not be met at a hearing this month, and the student won’t be returning to school.

She also criticized the use of social media to stoke anger in the community.

“When people inappropriately use social media or are posting things on social media that aren’t necessarily accurate information, it can really start to create a fear for our students or our families,” she said

“It can just be really detrimental to a community.”

Treadway says his daughters were threatened via text message by a student last May.

That same student was later found at school with a knife.  He was expelled at that time.
