Gov. Walker suggests state could help pay for costs associated with new CWD rules



So far, Gov. Scott Walker isn’t backing down on his call to, essentially, attempt a quarantine of deer farms in Wisconsin in order to limit the spread of chronic wasting disease.

But Walker has said this week he’s open to the state helping to defray costs associated with his orders to crack down on those farms.

Walker is probably still missing the point for guys like Greg Flees, from Whitetails of Wisconsin — the group that represents deer farms in the state.

“You could get rid of every game farm in the state of Wisconsin, it isn’t going to change the fact that CWD is all over the state,” Flees said.

Walker has ordered state agencies to come up with emergency CWD-fighting rules, calling for, among other things, additional protective fencing around deer farms.

“I don’t think there’s a single case of CWD in the wild that could be contributed to anything that a deer farm has ever done in Wisconsin,” Flees added.

There are nearly 400 deer farms in the state represented by Whitetails of Wisconsin.
