A man struck and killed by a train in Winona on Sunday morning has been identified as a 35-year-old La Crosse man.

Sherod Frazier was hit at 4:40 a.m. after he walked onto the tracks at the Carimona Street crossing.

The train operator sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake, but was not able to stop the train in time.

Melanie Sampson, who Frazier was with, was arrested for giving police a false name and date of birth because of an outstanding warrant.

The 39-year-old Chaseburg, Wis., native told police they had been drinking earlier in the night, and witnesses saw them arguing.

Train operators said by the time they saw Frazier it was too late to stop.
