South side school the latest in La Crosse to start its own garden

It was a little cold to break ground outside Hintgen Elementary School in La Crosse on Thursday, so kids shoveled snow instead.

A “ground-breaking” ceremony marked the beginning of a school garden at Hintgen, supported by the GROW La Crosse organization.

The garden on the south side of the building will be used to grow vegetables for school lunches.

The GROW La Crosse organization says that the project will also give students skills to “support a healthier world,” and it will include a butterfly garden.

GROW La Crosse also has gardens at Hamilton, Spence, and State Road Schools.

A fund-raiser for the Hintgen garden is scheduled this Saturday night from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pearl Street Brewery.
