The hope is to have a a museum in La Crosse ready within a couple of years.

Mayor Tim Kabat proposed that idea a few months ago and formed a task force to look into the idea.

City leaders and that task force have started the planning process Wednesday for a building to celebrate La Crosse’s history and culture.

City planner Jason Gilman thinks opening a museum within two years is ‘doable.’

The task force, to be chaired by local festival organizer Pat Stephens, will meet once a month.

One of its first goals is to decide whether the museum will be just a building for displaying artifacts, or whether it will present activities for the public.

The museum would also replace the former Swarthout museum that was located inside the La Crosse Public Library.

Tim Acklin, from the city planner’s office, said committee members will be asked to promote a vision for the community, even after they decide on a project.

“Even after this process is over we have a report about what we need to do,” Acklin said.

Gilman said choosing a site for the museum will be important and suggested the old Mobil Oil property known as Riverside North.
