A month after city commissioners quit, La Crosse mayor still looking for answers on housing issue

A month ago, the majority of the city’s Human Rights Commission quit, out of frustration over not being allowed to fully investigate public housing complaints.

Even though two new members were recently appointed, there still isn’t enough members to conduct business.

As for why the old members quit, La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat says the city is still trying to find out whether the commission has any authority over the operation of a federal housing program.

“We’re going to better clarify the process for receiving and responding to complaints,” Kabat said, “along with, ultimately the outcomes, whether that does get moved on to HUD or if it’s done here in La Crosse first.”

The mayor added that, “We all want fair housing,” and he wants to know how to achieve that.

Meanwhile, the city is still looking for a few more members to hold official meetings.
