Food trucks face additional inspection to operate in La Crosse

A new hurdle for food truck operators likely coming soon in La Crosse.

The city council is weighing an additional inspection for food trucks to be done by the fire department.

“By requiring when they go to regiser in the city clerk’s office for their licensse to have an inspection done, it gives us the abiltiy to complete what we need to complete on the inspection of the food truck prior to them operating for the year,” La Crosse assistant fire chief Craig Snyder said.

The fire fire safety inspection process would take 15-30 minutes for the operator, according to Snyder.

“It wasn’t an issue of complaint,” Snyder said. “It’s becoming more of an issue because of the number of them that we’re starting to see.”

Similar inspections are already conducted on food trucks in other Wisconsin cities like Madison, Milwaukee and Eau Claire.

The La Crosse inspections will evaluate everything from appliances to where propane tanks are mounted on the truck.

Snyder says National Fire Protection Association standards call for the inspections.
