There could be a special election soon for a La Crosse County treasurer.

Incumbent treasurer Shawn Handland, just elected to a new term last fall, has been hired by West Salem’s school district to be its finance director.

Next week, the county board could decide whether to schedule an election to fill the post for the next three years or to appoint a successor.

The next election for treasurer isn’t scheduled until the fall of 2020.

The county was criticized three years ago when a newly-elected board member resigned shortly after election, and the county used an appointment instead of a special election to fill the vacant seat.

That’s when former county clerk Linda Stone retired six years ago – halfway through her elected term. Ginny Dankmeyer was appointed to complete Stone’s term as clerk. She then won the next election in 2014.
