La Crosse area schools all over 90 percent

Every school in Wisconsin now has its vaccination percentages listed online.

The Wisconsin Dept. of Health lists those numbers on an interactive map (here).

All La Crosse area schools are above 90 percent.

“Between 90-100, that’s a good percentage to aim for,” Megan Mellar, infection specialist at Gundersen Health System said. “Lower than 90, that’s a little bit concerning.

“Maybe we need to do more targeted education to that school to understand some of the underlining reasons why people aren’t getting vaccinated.”

Mellar added that it’s up to those who are able and healthy to protect the sick.

“There’s a lot of individuals in our community, especially kids, who are not able to receive the necessary recommended vaccinations,” she said. “It comes down to the responsibility of other people in the population who can receive the vaccinations, to be vaccinated.”

On the website, if a percentage isn’t vaccinated, there is further explanation.

In Minnesota, there was a measles outbreak earlier this year, which led to 79 cases and a few hospitalizations. There were more Minnesota measles cases so far in 2017 than for the entire United States throughout 2016.

I also act as the voice of local sports, doing play by play of high school and college football and basketball. When not working I enjoy golfing.
