Despite other sites, committee only approves design funding at UW-L.

Looks like the replacement for the Memorial Pool in La Crosse will be at … Memorial Pool.

After months and months of study and debate, a city council committee has pushed forward plans to rebuild the 80-year-old Memorial Pool on the same site at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

“This pool certainly enhances that neighborhood and, in all respect, that’s a neighborhood that could go in either direction,” City council member Doug Happel said.

Speaking in front of the committee Thursday, Joey Kay urged quicker action, as his 14-year-old son could use the distraction this summer

“If I have this pool back, like I had two years ago, I could kick them out and tell them to go there – flirt with girls and do stuff, instead of looking at TVs,” Kay said. “Let’s get it done.”

There were other tantalizing choices for the new pool but the committee only approved funding designs to replace the pool at UW-L.

“This has been in front of the council for quite some time now,” Happel said. “Now it’s time to focus. And the focus is probably a combination of, it’s going to be at the Memorial site and maybe we have two designs in front of us. Let’s pick one.”

It isn’t clear what the final design for the pool will be, though it may be a historic-type renovation.

It’s also not clear when a pool would get done.

If, next month, the full city council agrees, the next step is coming together on a design for a new pool.
