Assembly Speaker says not to worry about July 1 deadline for spending plan

Republicans continue at odds over how to legislate majority power.

School taxes. Property taxes. Gas taxes. All of it in play still as the Republicans, who control government in Wisconsin, remain at odds over how to wield their legislative power.

But that independence, says assembly speaker, Robin Vos is not a bad thing.

“Our job is to find answers because that’s what the people elected us to do,” Vos said at a press event Tuesday. “They didn’t to be rubber stamps. They didn’t elect us to check our brain at the door when we walk inside the capitol.”

Vos was unveiling Republican Assembly plans for k-12 education that – they hope – will cut taxes and increase funding for schools at the same time. 

“They elected us to put our best ideas forward,” Vos continued. “Have the public discussion. And, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”

Republicans are saying ignore any apocalyptic worries about government shutdowns as lawmakers in Madison stand at odds over the spending plan for the next two years – even with that plan due on July first

“The July 1 deadline, luckily, for any person who is watching, has no impact on your life,” Vos said, adding the previous year’s budget will simply continue funding courts, food stamps and other programs at the same level if a new plan isn’t adopted.
