Gov. Walker strikes down request from schools to start before Sept. 1

Appears to be case between schools and tourism industry.

No luck for the La Crosse school board in starting schools before Sept. 1.

Monday, the board sent a resolution to the Wisconsin legislature, asking to lift a law forbidding a district from starting school before that date.

Less than 24 hours later, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says it has no shot of happening. 

“Where this kind of falls into play what schools would like to do and what happens with the tourism industry,” La Crosse superintendent Randy Nelson said.

Nelson added that it would help students begin preparing earlier for state testing.

The Tomah school board signed a similar resolution.
