La Crosse police dog needs overdose drug after training mishap
Could lead to changes in training
A La Crosse police dog has fully recovered from a training accident that led to the use of Narcan, the heroin overdose-fighting drug.
Police says K-9 officer Zaback and his handler/partner were involved in a drug search presentation last week when Zaback managed to bite into a little baggie of heroin.
It was just enough to make the German Shepherd lethargic, according to police, so he was taken to the vet.
Zaback didn’t seem to be in a great deal of danger but the vet used some Narcan as a precaution. Police say he’s fully recovered.
The accidental ingestion of heroin may lead to a slight change in training protocol for drug dogs in the future.
Zaback is the third drug dog on the force, added back in 2013.
