Director there says clinic did nothing wrong

Essential Health Clinic in La Crosse is probably won’t willingly send a check for thousands of dollars to the state.

An audit says the family planning clinic was improperly reimbursed by Medicaid and Medicare over a year’s time.

The Office of the Inspector General in Madison says it’s coming after that money from Essential Clinic and every other family planning clinic in the state that had similar audit results. 

Essential Health executive director Chrissy Feine says it’s probably not going to happen. She maintains her clinic is doing nothing wrong.

“We’re going to continue to appropriately use our Title X and Medicaid funds to provide these essential services to our pateints, who otherwise wouldn’t receive them or wouldn’t have the ability to pay,” Feine said.

Feine insists the clinic is following rules for reimbursement. 

“There needs to be a bigger conversation with auditors, honestly, with how these laws are being interpreted,” Feine said.

The audit examined a small sample number of the clinic’s clients to determine Essential Health was getting reimbursed nearly 50 percent more than it should have been.
