New law mandates e-filing be one by year’s end

A new Wisconsin state law requiring electronic files for court documents means more work for the already-busy employees of one La Crosse County department.

Even before the new e-filing law took effect this month, the La Crosse clerk of courts office was scrambling to scan old files being stored in the former 1965 courthouse.

That building has to be cleared out by year’s end so it can be converted to student housing, and clerk of courts Pam Radtke says the new state rules have greatly increased her staff’s workload.

“We knew the sale was coming but we didn’t know the mandatory e-filing was going to pass until the beginning of this year,” she said. “So, we’re double scurrying.”

Radtke says some of those old court files will have to be moved to another location before they can be transferred to computer.
