Opening ceremony at Riverside park at 11 a.m.

La Crosse’s Riverfest is set to kick off at 11 a.m. today at Riverside Park.

And, as with all outdoor festivals, it can be sketchy to plan in the upper midwest during the summer.

Riverfest certainly has had its share of close calls, along with one really bad year

“In 2012, when we had that heat wave, it was deadly to, not only te people who came down here, but the fest,” Riverfest director Paul Peterson said. “So, weather is very important.”

As for the weather this year, Peterson said things are looking pretty good.

David Nail is the headline musical act this year. The country performer is on the main stage Sunday night. Admission will be free for the concert.

The festival wraps up with fireworks and more music Monday night.

Check out the entire schedule here. Admission is $10 at the gate. Kids 12 and under are free.
