Soft opening set for 10 a.m. Friday

La Crosse’s newest park is set to open.

At 10 a.m. Friday, George C. Poage Park will have a soft opening.

City park and rec. boss, Steve Carlyon says there’s still a few things to get done at the park, but it’s ready for kids to play in.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for next month at the park, which was formerly known as Hood Park.

Attending the ceremony are expected to be some of George Poage’s living relatives.

Poage, who grew up in La Crosse, became the nation’s first black Olympic medalist at the St Louis games in 1904.

You can read more about him here. The park is located here.
