Company hopes to turn old school into 32 apartments

A nearly $7-million project for an old school on La Crosse’s north side could get a boost through a city loan.  

The city’s Economic Development Commission meets this week to consider a $352,000 loan to Gorman and Company to buy and rebuild Roosevelt school.

Gorman plans to turn Roosevelt into 32 affordable apartments, targeting family households at or below 60 percent of the median income for the county.  

The school district earlier this year agreed to the final plans for the purchase and redevelopment of the school after about a year and a half of talks with Gorman. 

The Madison area company had hoped for some state tax credits for the project, but those were denied last year.

The school district vacated the school in 2014, sending students there to the new Northside Elementary.
