South Avenue not getting wider any time soon

City may do a study on transportation alternatives

 

Though the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation has backed off of plans to make South Avenue in La Crosse wider, the city could still study how to improve the corridor through transportation alternatives.  

This month, the city council could consider funding an in-depth study of those alternatives and get some public feedback.

It’s something that needs to be fixed to make it safer, says city council member Fran Formanek, who represents the area.

“Going across South Avenue right now, you’re taking your life in your own hands,” Formanek said. 

One of the ideas of the proposed study is to get hard data on just how transportation alternatives could alter traffic volumes and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
