Wisconsin deserves sales tax holiday

Nobody likes paying taxes. So it sure would be nice to get a break. Some lawmakers in Madison are proposing just that. A group of state legislators is proposing a sales tax holiday that would coincide with annual back-to-school shopping. If approved, this legislation would allow people to buy back-to-school items like clothing, computers and school supplies tax free. The two-day holiday would begin on the first Saturday in August, when a lot of people are doing their school shopping. There would be some limits. Shoppers would be able to buy an item of clothing, up to $75 in value, without having to pay the sales tax. Computers up to $2000 and up to $300 in school supplies would be tax free. This would be good news for consumers, whose buying power would increase. But it would also likely be a boon for businesses, which would likely see people spending more than they would when they were charged a sales tax.It would likely keep people on this side of the state from heading to Minnesota to buy back to school clothes without having to pay sales tax. A growing number of states, including neighboring Iowa, have adopted a sales tax holiday. It is time for Wisconsin to do the same.
